Our Aymara Sun Square Butterfly Cufflinks come from The Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Orphanage in Peru, where butterflies live and die naturally in their own unique Amazon habitat. Their life span is normally two to three weeks, during which time their elegant wings flutter throughout the sanctuary, and then pass on naturally. The cufflinks are made from real Phoebis Argante butterfly wings, which are then enameled over, and set in Peruvian Sterling Silver. Peruvian Sterling Silver is 95% pure silver and one of the best alloys of silver in world, which increases the cufflinks' strength, as well as their resistance to tarnishing. The vivid yellow colors of the wings from these wondrous creatures will add an exotic touch to your cuffs. Each cufflink is highly detailed, one of a kind, and will support the continuation and growth of each species through your purchase. Because we are passionate about the efforts of the Amazon Animal Orphanage, 10% of all the proceeds from these Butterfly Cufflinks go towards supporting the orphanage. You can also visit their website at: for more information. The genus Phoebis is comprised of 8 species, most of which are strongly migratory in behavior. Because Phoebis Argante, unlike other butterfly species, form tightly packed groups, sometimes containing several dozen insects, the males use their beautifully bright, yellow wings to rise up in swirling masses when disturbed. They can be found in many habitats ranging from rain forests, open deciduous woodlands, grassland, farmlands, and gardens. These exotic creatures are found anywhere from Mexico to Uruguay, but also find their niche in islands in the Caribbean and Cuba. The males often come together to imbibe mineralized moisture from the riverbanks and are, in general, a very communal species. If they are disturbed, they flutter their precious wings for several minutes in the air, and resettle on the riverbank once they sense it is save to do so.
